| Located opposite Washington, DC at the head of navigation on the Potomac River, Alexandria was one of America’s principal ports from the early 18th century until developing railroads and steamships eventually caused the demise of merchant sail. The vessel in the middle distance is the General Harrison which 4 years later became an abandoned hulk in San Francisco during the Gold Rush. Its timbers still remain in place under the reclaimed downtown area. |
