Lightning Rounding Cape Horn

Clear

Description

This renowned vessel was one of the famous quartet of clipper ships designed by Boston’s Donald McKay with the radically new convex entrance lines which caused the hull to literally slice through the water rather than push it aside as before. Launched at East Boston in 1854, the LIGHTNING, with the notorious James Nicol Forbes as commander, set a record fast time on her maiden voyage to Liverpool by covering 436 nautical miles in 24 hours.
