Moonlight Encounter on the Mississippi

Clear

Description

In this scene the raftsmen had not realized the lamp had gone out on their mast, making it impossible for the on-rushing steamboat to see the hazard ahead. Such confrontations were apparently common in the days when transporting lumber by way of the raft was about the only method of supplying the mills at New Orleans.
