New York East River Arrival c. 1884

In this view, the Down Easter “Eclipse” has arrived during a late afternoon storm.  Her sails must remain unfurled to dry overnight as crew members adjust moorings on the focs’l head.  Built in Bath, Maine, the “Eclipse” was launched in 1878, at 1,535 tons and 221 ft. in length.  Also seen here, looking northeast, is the iron-built Brooklyn Ferry Terminal and the new brick Fulton Fish Market with its three cupolas beyond.  The eight-year old Brooklyn Bridge serves as a backdrop.
